So... Who was Menocchio?

Roger Chartier, in his essay "Reading Matter and 'Popular' Reading," mentions more than once the name Menocchio, but he never explains who he was or why he was important. He was "discovered" by the Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg and became the subject of his influential book
