I remember mentioning Garrett Stewart's The Look of Reading (2006) earlier this semester. A copy is on our reserve shelves (1506 & 1507) at the LC. Perhaps even better for our purposes is his essay in the journal Narrative (May 2003): "Painted Readers, Narrative Regress". Please be patient while it loads; the essay includes dozens of photographs and is therefore quite large.
Stewart has a new book out this year that looks fascinating, Bookworks. Loosely speaking, it's about sculptural books and books as sculpture. The introduction (preview) is available full-text at the link above.
