The above is the title of a famous exchange in the pages of the American Historical Review in February of 2002. Anthony Grafton provides a brief introduction to the controversy between Adrian Johns and Elizabeth Eisenstein. Please read all fours sections: Grafton, Eisenstein, Johns, and Eisenstein's final reply, and post a short response of 100 or so words in the comment box of this post. We'll have a debate in class on November 9, so be sure to have it done before then.

Here is the link to "I can read movies" which I thought were neat interpretations of the films and how the book covers would look like.

I found Eisenstein to be very acerbic and almost hysterical in her essay/attack on Adrian Johns and his The Nature of the Book (1998). On the other hand, Johns seemed to systemically and impartially dissect Eisenstein's argument as well as flaws in her The Printing Press as an Agent of Change (1979).
