Whether you attended the conference or not, take a look at http://www.printinghistory-chesapeake.org/ for images and descriptions from lectures, receptions, and demonstrations from both days. Thanks to all the students who came to help. We'll spend the first half of class discussing some of the ideas and issues that emerge from your reactions and thoughts. If you took notes, please read through them before class. This will help to fuel our discussion. Be critical. Don't be afraid to dispute the ideas put forth from the conference presenters or from the focus of the conference itself. Students who didn't attend the conference should be able to participate in the discussion because we'll be talking about the ideas, not so much the presentation of the ideas.
In the second half of class we'll switch over to a discussion of Steinberg's overview of the 19th century. The following week, October 27, we'll discuss a few case-study essays that take a closer look at issues in 19th century print culture (or book history) that Steinberg only briefly addresses.
