These unwitting book-sculptures from the main library at the University of Salford (outside of Manchester, UK) fascinated me when I saw them in July. The placement was site-specific, in spaces that were part of the library's main floor but not in any sense an art gallery. These books were assembled/piled in unused corners. It felt like the next stop was the loading dock and the recycling truck. I don't exactly mourn the "passing" of these books, but these images fill me with questions and thoughts. What questions and thoughts do you have when you reflect on the pictures above?
An ongoing online project of Casey Smith's MA seminar, "The History of the Western Book," at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington DC, focusing on information, discussion, and debate about the history (and future) of scripted forms, especially the printed forms of the past five hundred years commonly referred to as books.

What Do We Do With the Books?
