Dear Students,
Please bookmark this blog and join as a follower. I'll be using Gutenberg 2 Google (G2G) for updates of all kinds, both curricular and non-curricular. If you know of something that would be of interest to the seminar--a lecture, exhibit, Web site, essay, etc.-- please forward it to me at csmith@corcoran.org and I'll post it here. I'm new to designing and administering a blog, even a simple one like this. I'm well aware that it's ugly and clumsy, so your advice for improving it is most welcome.
Here's some good news! The total cost of books in this class should come to less than $50. Our central text, the one you should order as soon as possible, is SH Steinberg's Five Hundred Years of Printing. You can buy it directly from Oak Knoll Press, but delivery time and price might be better with Amazon or Barnes and Noble or some other vendor. Please let me know if you're having a difficult time procuring a copy. I'll also put a copy of it on reserve in the Corcoran Library and at the Library of Congress, but this is the one book that everyone needs to buy and bring to class every week. There might be another book to buy in the second half of the semester. Many readings will come to you in the form of URL links, pdf files, and even old-fashioned photocopy packets. I have two study shelves at the LC, 1506 &1507, with material related to the field of book history. I'll explain this and much more on the first day of class.
