An ongoing online project of Casey Smith's MA seminar, "The History of the Western Book," at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington DC, focusing on information, discussion, and debate about the history (and future) of scripted forms, especially the printed forms of the past five hundred years commonly referred to as books.

Wonderful Synthesis
Jessica Brantley teaches courses in medieval bibliography at Yale. I came across her essay The Prehistory of the Book (PMLA, 2009) and thought I would share it with the class. What she does in this short piece is bring together Leslie Howsam's "book historian" concerns with those of a medievalist. It's a great essay (and a perfect model of MLA style).I highly recommend reading it as a conclusion to our unit on medieval book culture.
