Next Week, October 4, Meet at Library of Congress

We have a change in plans. We're fortunate to be in a book history hotspot, Washington, DC, and therefore have the opportunity to attend great events like the one at the Library of Congress next Thursday at 3. The first half of our class will take place in LJ205, the second half will be a discussion about the regular class readings. We'll have to find a space for this discussion, so the location is TBA and it will start between 4:30 and 5:00 pm.

Text me at 202.460.6864 if you're late or lost.

In addition, I'll offer a free and wonderfully informative guided tour of the research facilities of the LC. For those wanting or needing the tour, we'll meet at the front steps of the Madison building (on the south side of Independence Avenue, between 1st and 2nd St, SE) promptly at 2:00. Bring a picture ID with a current address.

Here are some details of the talk we're attending:

A Conversation with
Gaylord Schanilec and Russell Maret

On the surface, the fine press books of Wisconsin wood engraver Gaylord Schanilec and New York type designer Russell Maret appear very different from one another. Schanilec’s books draw on his natural surroundings in rural Wisconsin to create intricately realized multi-color wood engravings while Maret’s books explore the high and low corners of European alphabetical history for both their form and content. There resides, however, an affinity of approach: Both Schanilec and Maret collect specimens, pair them with historical texts, and append them with notes to create books that offer highly personalized perspectives on history, art, and literature. Join us for a discussion moderated by Jane Siegel, a Rare Book Librarian from Columbia University.
